What stress is doing to your body and how to fix it

DogstressDecember is a time when stress levels typically increase. There’s more to do and it seems less time to do it. When stressed our need for essential nutrients increases, yet stress depletes those nutrients putting our bodies in dangerous loop. Most people underestimate the impact of stress on their health.

When stressed our bodies produce more cortisol (the stress hormone) and our adrenal glands (which produce cortisol) become over-burdened. The demand on our cells is greater and we physically need more vitamins and minerals to operate and defend against the damaging effects of stress. The major deficiencies happen with Vitamins A, B, C and E and minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium and zinc.

  • Vitamin A helps support adrenal function and minimizes the over-production of cortisol.
  • B vitamins protect against the rise in cortisol, defend against adrenal fatigue, support the production of essential hormones and aid in digestion and nutrient absorption.
  • Vitamin C helps protect against cellular oxidation (think antioxidant), support our immune system, reduce anxiety and support cardiovascular health.
  • Vitamin E improves stress responses and reduces serum levels of cortisol.

Shortages of these essential vitamins leaves us unable to defend against the physiological, emotional and physical impact of stress. And, that’s only part of the picture. On the mineral side:

  • Calcium supports the nervous system as well as healthy bone development and maintenance and is profoundly depleted by stress.
  • Magnesium at optimal levels relaxes muscles and calms the nervous system but magnesium deficiency is correlated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Chromium deficiency can produce increased insulin requirements since they work together to help moderate blood sugar.
  • Zinc is needed to store insulin and the adrenal glands need zinc to make acid to aid digestion

With all this stress; our nerves are fried, we struggle to relax and sleep, cortisol levels rise, blood sugar levels spike, digestion takes a back seat, the pounds pack on, heart attack and stroke levels increase, and we’re more stressed because of all of this. This compounded stress tends to lead to decreased healthy habits, more sugary foods, higher alcohol consumption, increased smoking, poorer food choices, skipping meals, less exercise, less sleep and the downward spiral continues.

It’s not you – it’s physical! Your body is a complex operating machine and it needs all the essential nutrients to function properly – and more when you’re stressed.
