Smoothies & Green Drinks & Juicing – Oh my!

Are you confused? Do you hear people talking about protein shakes, fruit smoothies, green drinks, juicing, and the like and think ‘When did it get so complicated’? I’m with ya!  And, I’ve found my way through the options and would love to shed some light.   For me, I’ve sorted things into 3 categories: Blending Extracting Juicing Blending – a pureed drink made with a blender type appliance. Called a smoothie, these drinks typically start with a liquid base (most commonly regular/coconut water, coconut/almond/soy/regular milk) and have add-ons like protein powder, fruits, nuts,...

Love Your Breasts!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. You see pink ribbons and pink symbols everywhere, including many of the NFL players who were adorned with pink gloves, bands, towels and the like during yesterday’s games. (Nothing like macho men in pink!) I send compassion and love to those who have experienced breast cancer in their life in any way. I’m all for education and support, but personally I would like to see one small tweak and have October called Breast Health Awareness month. “Our thoughts create our reality — where we put our focus is the direction we tend to go.” – Peter...

My Favorite Cooling Summer Smoothie

My Favorite Cooling Summer Smoothie

Staying hydrated during the summer heat is important and challenging. Especially when out in the sun, on the beach, sweating out the heat, and enjoying summer activities. Here is a recent experiment of a simple and spectacular summer smoothie to keep yourself hydrated and healthy. cube a fresh watermelon fill a blender with watermelon cubes, ice, and coconut water blend ENJOY It is that easy. To make it more juicy and smooth freeze some of the watermelon cubes and use them in place of the ice. You can add fresh herbs (basil or mint are two of my favorites) to give it some extra flavor. Two steps closer to optimal health

Yesterday I started a Paleo challenge at my CrossFit gym. Paleo is a lifestyle of eating that includes lean meats (fish, chicken, beef, pork, turkey), vegetables, nuts and seeds; little starch or fruit; and no dairy, sugar, grains or legumes. For the next 30 days we are very strict. (I’ll update you on results after it is over!) There is a point system to “grade” us with a maximum of 8 points for day for diet, workouts, sleep and supplementation! I was thrilled (and a bit surprised) that you can get a point each for Vitamin D and Fish Oil supplementation. That’s 25% of the daily maximum...

Is your sunscreen toxic?

Is your sunscreen toxic?

Here comes the sun (do du do do). Here comes the sun, and I say – It’s all right. That’s a great Beatles song and it certainly is all right. Especially after a long cold lonely winter! It FINALLY warmed up this weekend and I put the top down on my convertible. Boy did it feel good to have rays of sunlight soaking into my skin (good Vitamin D fix). And, it’s time to put some sunscreen in my glove compartment as I got pink fast! Some sun exposure is good for us. Too much is not. We must protect our skin, our largest organ, from sun damage. Covering up with clothing is an option....

Choosing a Quality Nutritional Supplement

Choosing a Quality Nutritional Supplement

Part 2 of my nutritional supplement series: I cringe when I hear people say “Nutritional supplements are all the same. I just buy the cheapest one.” Ask yourself this…Is the quality of anything all the same? Have you ever had a bad cup of coffee? A bad meal? Had something you purchased just fall apart? Well the same is true for supplements. They are not all created equal. So how do you choose a quality supplement? First let me give you a bit of background. Nutritional supplements are classified by the FDA as a food not a drug so manufacturing of supplements falls under the same quality...
