Life is like a puzzle

Life is a puzzle This past weekend I visited my Mom. She had recently started a 1000+ piece jigsaw puzzle! It was a beautiful scene of over 50 hot air balloons rising above the ground. Many of the balloons were quite intricate, some were simple and a handful looked way too much alike. I could tell this puzzle would be a challenge yet I proceeded to jump right in. Mom had already built the outside border and a few of the simple balloons (the hippo is adorable.) We sorted the remaining puzzle pieces into groups to help make things easier....

Weight Loss: A side effect of enjoying life

What if losing weight was a side effect of enjoying life to the fullest and living a healthier lifestyle? Sound interesting? In a survey* of more than 5,000 US adults enjoying life to the fullest, living a healthier lifestyle, and losing weight were the top 3 2016 desired new year’s resolutions. Actually, losing weight has always topped the charts of resolutions (not to mention personal health goals.) But, are we looking at it all wrong? Most people think of losing weight and dieting as unpleasant. Restricting calories. Avoiding foods they...

Your Best 1st Step for a Healthy Year

Happy New Year! Whether you spent a cozy night in or a formal night out, I hope you had an enjoyable one. If you’re like me you may have indulged just a wee bit this season. Or, maybe you indulged a lot. Parties, goodies, sweets, dinners, cocktails and coffee are commonplace. Increased stress levels often mean increased smoking, sleep aids or other over-the-counter medications. Or, you might have been around sick people – or even been sick yourself. Whatever your experience, everything you took in – your liver was responsible for...

The Secret to Successful Self Care

Life is full of choices. A single daily lifestyle choice will not likely “make or break your health”, however the compound effect of daily choices certainly will. What’s the secret to successful self-care? Self-care isn’t about taking care of ourselves once in a while. Self-care is about taking care of ourselves every day through daily lifestyle choices. Rather than make a big aggressive New Year’s Resolution, take a look at what small sustainable lifestyle choices you can make. Maybe you decide to take the stairs instead of the elevator....

The big reason it’s time to move to a new state

The big reason it’s time to move to a new state

I live in a new state. I’m a Florida snowbird! After the record breaking snowfall of the 2014-2015 Boston winter I stopped talking the talk and walked the walk. Actually I didn’t walk, I drove from Massachusetts and gratefully replanted myself into sunshine and warmth simply because I could and because I desired to live a lifestyle I love. So I now find myself in Florida. I’m living in a completely new state. And, boy am I. The greater symbolism of “living in a new state” has not escaped me. Well, it did until now. Living in a new state...

Sleep – A dream come true

Sleep – A dream come true

Are visions of sugar plums dancing in your head or do you only dream of what it would be like to get a full and restful night of sleep? If the latter is true, you’re not alone. More people struggle to catch a good night’s rest during the busy holiday season. Sleep deprivation can have serious mental and physical consequences, resulting in poor concentration, impaired coordination, blurred vision, compromised immune function, and an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. (Oh yeah and increased crankiness.) All that from a lack of sleep....

What stress is doing to your body and how to fix it

Posted by on Dec 17, 2015 in Blog | 2 comments

December is a time when stress levels typically increase. There’s more to do and it seems less time to do it. When stressed our need for essential nutrients increases, yet stress depletes those nutrients putting our bodies in dangerous loop. Most people underestimate the impact of stress on their health. When stressed our bodies produce more cortisol (the stress hormone) and our adrenal glands (which produce cortisol) become over-burdened. The demand on our cells is greater and we physically need more vitamins and minerals to operate and...

The 1st Thing You Should Do Every Morning

Stick out your tongue. And, scrape it! Maybe you’ve been told “Don’t stick out your tongue at me.” Well, I’m telling you – GO AHEAD! Stick it out, way out, first thing in the morning. And, scrape it! Tongue scraping is an Ayurvedic (a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing with origins in the Vedic culture of India) practice. It’s just what it sounds like: the practice of scraping the tongue to remove toxic residue such as bacteria, fungi, dead cells and food debris deposited while you sleep. Have you ever woken up with really stinky...

Letting the Divine Take the Lead

Last Sunday I was enjoying some time at a dear friend’s home. She’s quite a talented tango dancer. I was captivated watching her and her partner float across the floor in an intimate embrace. After finishing they asked me if I wanted to try. Feelings of doubt and insecurity wafted over me and I declined admitting I was no match for such talent. Again they danced and I was once again mesmerized. And, again they turned to me and asked if I wanted to try. They reassured me that my partner wouldn’t try anything fancy. I had a moment of...

Smoothies & Green Drinks & Juicing – Oh my!

Posted by on Mar 25, 2014 in Blog, Health | 4 comments

Are you confused? Do you hear people talking about protein shakes, fruit smoothies, green drinks, juicing, and the like and think ‘When did it get so complicated’? I’m with ya!  And, I’ve found my way through the options and would love to shed some light.   For me, I’ve sorted things into 3 categories: Blending Extracting Juicing Blending – a pureed drink made with a blender type appliance. Called a smoothie, these drinks typically start with a liquid base (most commonly regular/coconut water, coconut/almond/soy/regular milk) and have...
